Blog 10
After being evaluated by other person, it is time for me to evaluate others. Everyone suppose to prepare the evaluation form and distribute to other during the microteaching session. Unfortunately, there are several students that don’t give the form when they do the microteaching especially boy students. Maybe they think that it is not important to them. The students performance during the microteaching session is quite impressive and there some students who are good too. The activities that they do are very interesting. I like the set induction done by Amanda and Jasmit who conduct a game title “Thebes Next Top King”. For the while reading stage, Syariza done a good job by put a lot of exercises in her worksheet unfortunately I think it is not suitable for students and they must need longer time to finish all the exercise.

Evaluation! Such a taboo word. There is big difference between we do the work for pleasure and do the work for evaluation. If we do the work just for pleasure, we tend to enjoy rather than think about the work and unconsciously the job is already done without realize it. As for the work that we do and being evaluate by other person, the aura must be different. We must be in a lot of pressure and tense to be the best and make sure that our work is perfect. During the microteaching, our friend will be evaluated us and give grades on our performance during the microteaching session. I can feel the pressure and tense during the session. However, the work must be done perfectly and I should put aside all the feeling that keep bothering me. Luckily, I manage to finish the task even though during the closure I make a mistake.

Its time for the next simulated teaching or we can consider as microteaching. For this task, we are allowed to do in partner. Two persons per group. For last semester, the second simulated teaching can be done three persons per group. At first I’m thinking to do the simulated teaching with my previous partner but later I decide to work with another person. This time, I work with Adilah. There are some difficulties that coming through the way because of the different style of learning between Adilah and me. Adilah prefer to work on something as a whole and she interested in doing theme for our microteaching. For me, I prefer look something in details and I like to do characters. Finally we choose to do character. In choosing the text also become a problem because we not sure what play that we want to do. After several meetings and discussion, we decide to do Antony and Cleopatra.

It is another Shakespearean play that I will learn. Phew!. Before this I learned Twelfth Night during my foundation year in JB. No doubt, learning Shakespeare play is quite hard because the words used in the play are difficult to understand. Even though I just learn Twelfth Night but I also familiar with other Shakespearean play such as a well known play, Romeo and Juliet and also Midsummer Night’s Dream. This time I learn another Shakespearean play which is Antony and Cleopatra. Before this, I heard about this play but I never read it just the title is familiar. I really like the book that we use for Antony and Cleopatra because it really helps me in understanding the lines. At the bottom of each page, there are references for the difficult words. It makes me understand the lines faster.

It is the time for us to do simulated teaching. For the subject Teaching the language of short story that we did last semester, Dr Edwin was the one who evaluated us for the simulated teaching but for now, Miss Baiti will evaluate us. Based on last semester experience, I think that I get some ideas and know already what I have to do for simulated teaching. At this point, we are required to do only for set induction and pre-reading stage for the play Oedipus. I still remember how I brainstorm idea to do this task, it’s when I take bath in shower and suddenly I get idea. Such an amazing place to brainstorm idea and I think it is very effective. I want to use smiley because it can relate to emotion that portray Oedipus’s character. Unfortunately, everything that I planned not going on smoothly. This is because I just draw the smiley on A4 paper and Miss Baiti tells me that I should download the picture from internet and use the lcd projector to make it more attractive.

Blog 2
Learning how to teaching the language of drama is different if compare to teaching the language of short story. For short story, I don’t have to know about the history of short story. Just focus at the short story and writers. As for drama, I have to know a little bit about the background of the drama and theatre itself. Before this I always think that theatre only divided into two types which are modern theatre and older version of theatre. Now then I know that in “older version” of theatre there are a few types. There are Greek Theatre, Roman Theatre, Medieval Theatre and 20th century drama. Before this, I just consider all these as “older version” and “modern version” without knowing it has appropriate term. When Dr. Edwin taught about all these, I feel lucky because I actually can imagine and visualize how the theatre looks like during medieval theatre because I had watched the movie “Shakespeare In Love”. Setting in that movie really show how theatre looks like during medieval era and it make me have clear view about it when Dr. Edwin mention about it.

After we have experience on how to answer the question about Oedipus Rex in the booklet, I can continue do the next question in the booklet by me. During the tutorial session, we already know how to answer the question and give positive feedback when Miss Baiti wants to discuss the answer with us. I also can answer the question confidently because I already know the way to answer the question. Compare to the previous tutorial session, Miss Baiti had to called name to answer the question but after that, there are students who are volunteer to answer without Miss Baiti called a person to answer. However, the class is not going on smoothly at first today. This is because there is some miscommunication about the timetable of our lesson. In the timetable that we had, the class start on 1p.m and finish at 3p.m. So when we coming there, the class wasn’t empty and we had to wait outside until 2p.m because Miss Baiti said that the class was at 2p.m to 4p.m.Even though we have to wait outside the class for one hour, I think that we really had good time together chitchatting all the time.

11 January 2008 was the first time for tutorial session with Miss Siti Nur Baiti who is the demonstrator for this subject. I had met her before during last semester when she replaces Dr. Edwin’s class. When she came to class, she brought with her a booklet full of questions related to Oedipus Rex. After I got the booklet, I just looked at it and I didn’t know what to do even though it was obviously full of questions that required me to answer. It was not me who didn’t know what to do, there were some of my friend also just stair at the paper. The response that some of my friend and I gave was because of we didn’t know how to answer the question and what the question needed. All of this happens maybe because this was first time I saw that kind of question for drama. Before this, the question for drama was given an extract and we answer the question based on the extract. Luckily, Miss Siti Nur Baiti gave us guidance on how to answer the question and discuss with us how to find the answer from the text.

Literature? During my secondary school, that word was a nightmare to me. I started learning literature when I was in form four in 2002. It was a horrible experience for me at that time. This is because, I don’t really familiar yet with English words and suddenly I had to learn literature which using difficult words. Make thing worst, the first lesson was Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare. At first, I felt really terrify but after a few months, I was able to catch up. However, during first test, I got zero mark for literature. How embarrassing. After that, I tried hard to understand what I learnt in literature and made a lot of exercises. The effort that I put really worth it because finally I can answer literature’s question and I also didn’t get zero anymore. Now, as a TESLian the word literature is a complement to me. This is because being in this course makes me have to take variety of subjects related to literature. For example, during my first semester, I took Survey of prose, Malaysian Literature in English during second semester and Teaching the language of short story in third semester. For this semester, I meet with another subject related to literature which is Teaching the language of drama.
